Experimental study of ceramic coatings on lower-density ceramic substrates

چکیده

Adhesion and homogeneity of the coating-substrate were analyzed on basis establishment coating mineralogy. Substrate raw materials used kaolin clay a calcined alumina 4 µm; series higher density ceramic coatings deposited using aluminas 0.5 µm µm, silica fume, talc. The dip technique was applied to all substrates later sintered at 1300 ºC. Shrinkage mixtures substrate separately evaluated. X-ray diffraction utilized identify crystalline phases present in coatings, while optical electron microscopy employed for structural characterization coatings. Coatings exhibited lower shrinkage compared substrate. Among specimens that good adhesion, cracks observed extend parallel surface. presence cristobalite indicated failure mechanism involved buckling. crack dimension presented decreased after adding talc mixture.

Glass-(nAg, nCu) Biocide Coatings on Ceramic Oxide Substrates

The present work was focused on obtaining biocide coatings constituted by a glassy soda-lime matrix containing silver or copper nanoparticles on ceramic (alumina and zirconia based) substrates. Both glassy coatings showed a high biocide activity against Gram-, Gram+ bacteria and yeast, reducing cell numbers more than three logarithms. Silver nanoparticles had a significantly higher biocide acti...

Microwave Drilling of Ceramic Thermal-Barrier Coatings

The microwave drill is a novel process for creating shaped holes in nonconductive materials. Its inherent material selectivity makes the microwave drill ideally suited for the controlled removal of ceramic coatings from underlying metallic substrates. In this paper, it is shown that the microwave drill process can drill through ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) to uncover an array of simu...

Contact-induced Damage in Ceramic Coatings on Compliant Substrates: Fracture Mechanics and Design

Simple explicit relations are presented for the onset of competing fracture modes in ceramic coatings on compliant substrates from Hertzian-like contacts. Special attention is given to a deleterious mode of radial cracking that initiates at the lower coating surface beneath the contact, in addition to traditional cone cracking and quasiplasticity in the nearcontact area. The critical load relat...

Thermal Barrier Ceramic Coatings — A Review

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) provide effective thermal barrier to the components of gas turbine engines by allowing higher operating temperatures and reduced cool‐ ing requirements. Plasma spraying, electron-beam physical vapor deposition, and sol‐ ution precursor plasma spray techniques are generally used to apply the TBCs on the metallic substrates. The present article addresses the TBCs f...
